The
Sister-Friend program matches trained volunteers with pregnant and parenting
teenagers and women in order to provide care, support, and education that
encourages better birth outcomes. The program is based on a “sister
to sister” model with each volunteer (Sister-Friend) responsible for
a pregnant teenager/ woman. Participants range from 12- 44 years old, who
are in situations from unemployed to employed, without health insurance,
married, unmarried with risk factors such as chronic diseases, substance
abuse, and/ or lack basic resources. The Sister-Friends maintain contact
with their “little sisters” from the date they are matched until
the baby’s first birthday. Why is it needed? In Phoenix, the most alarming infant mortality rates are recorded by African American women. These babies die because they are born too soon (premature birth) and too small, weighing less than 5 - 1/2 pounds. Early and regular prenatal care is one of the best ways to prevent these tragedies. The infant mortality rate for Black babies is 20 per 1000, more than double the rate of babies of all other races and ethnicities. The Sister-Friend Program: Recruits Sister-Friends (community volunteers) through the churches, the mosques, other organizations, and on an individual basis • Accepts referrals from anyone who knows a pregnant woman who would like to participate • Provides direction and support necessary for the expectant mom to obtain health care • Provides labor support, when appropriate, during delivery • Teaches parenting skills and provides support and guidance to new mothers • Helps new mothers return to work or school • Links with health care providers and human services agencies to establish cooperation, coordination, and appropriate use of services and resources. If you are interested in becoming a SisterFriend, or you are a pregnant teen/woman that would like to be matched with a SisterFriend, contact us. This program is supported through funds from Valley of the Sun United Way, and March of Dimes. |
