A Call to Action!

These are exciting times in our country's history. People are ready for change. There is a hunger to make a difference, and frankly, the time could not be more right to do things differently, see things differently, and treat each other differently. 

But so much is still the same, and has even gotten worse. I was struck by the recent statistic stating that one in four teen girls in this country is infected with a sexually transmitted disease. That is frightening. At the Birthing Project, we see girls who are age 13, 14, and 15  coming to us pregnant, with no idea about what is going on with their bodies, and are not finishing school. Babies having babies. Still. We are seeing pregnant women who are being abused by their baby's father just because they are pregnant, being forced to run and hide to avoid being hurt or even killed. Still.

We must do things differently to make a difference. The Academy of Dreams Program that we offer for teen girls is different, and it is needed now more than ever. Due to funding cuts, we have not been able to provide the program to as many girls that need it. We need financial and volunteer support to allow us to offer the program and expand it to reach more girls in our community. Our Working Wonders Program is different. It prepares young parents for the responsibility of taking care of a new baby. This program is needed now more than ever. Our Sister Friend Program provides emotional and practical support to pregnant and parenting teens and women who need it. So much of what we do at the Birthing Project is needed because of the difference we make, and yet it takes dedication and commitment and funding to help make the difference occur.

What can you do today? Volunteer your time and talents. We are recruiting mentors, Sister Friends, parenting educators, childbirth educators, nurses, doctors, social workers, health educators, doulas, outreach workers, case managers, teachers, business people. Call our office if you are interested in becoming a volunteer.

Donate money or help us raise funds to keep our programs going strong. Online donations are accepted any time by going to the "Donations" tab on this website, and clicking on "Donate Online". 

Join us in 2008 in the campaign for change.  We are all in this together. The work we do is for our babies, our community, and our future!! You will see by getting involved that you can make all the difference in the world!
